Das Nachtleben von Istanbul ist legendär. Die spektakulärste Attraktion ist zurzeit die Tanzshow "Sultans of the Dance". In der Show der Superlative geht es um Geschichte und Neuzeit. Der Choreograph Mustafa Erdogan will mit der Show alte Tänze und eine moderne Inszenierung miteinander verbinden. Istanbul ist, mit seinen europäischen und asiatischen Teilen, der ideale Aufführungsort, denn hier treffen Gegensätze aufeinander: Ost und West, gestern und heute. Die opulente Show erzählt die Saga aus 1001 Nacht, den ständigen Kampf von Gut und Böse, den Zwist zwischen dem göttlichen Sohn Prometheus und der Erdengöttin Pandora. Ein Feuerwerk der Folklore mit über einhundert Tänzer und Musikern.

Türkisch ist hip. Nicht nur sprachakrobatisch à la Erkan & Stefan, sondern auch als Party-Kültür. Und die gibt’s nirgendwo hautnaher als in Istanbul. Unsere Autorin Katja-Barbara Heine ist am Bosporus aufgewachsen und hat uns ins Nachtleben der Metropole eingeführt.

Das Taxi legt sich in die Kurve und saust den Hang hinauf. „Festhalten“ ruf’ ich Kati zu, die zum ersten Mal in Istanbul ist. Alp, Ayflen und ich krallen uns automatisch in die Polster. Achterbahneinlagen Istanbuler Taxifahrer sind wir gewöhnt. Wie den türkischen Pop, der aus den Boxen dröhnt, dass die Bässe im Hals kratzen. Über eines staunen allerdings selbst Istanbul-Kenner immer wieder: die Pracht, in der die Stadt strahlt, wenn es dunkel wird. Warme Lichter schweben vorbei wie Sternschnuppen, bunt bestrahlte Minarette ragen in den Himmel, unter uns glänzt der Bosporus wie zähflüssiger, schwarzer Lack. Die Nacht steht Istanbul verdammt gut. Das findet auch der Taxifahrer, der mal in Köln gelebt hat. „Wenn dunkel, dann Istanbul noch viel mehr schön“, ruft er, um gegen die Musik anzukommen.

Es ist Freitagabend, und wir sind auf dem Weg nach Beyo_lu, dem „Soho des Orients“. Das quirlige Viertel in Istanbuls Altstadt zieht Bohemiens, Szenevolk und Vergnügungssüchtige in seine dunklen Gassen, schummrigen Bars und vollen Clubs. Hier verschmelzen Folklore und Hype, Arabesk und Drum’n’Base, Orient und Okzident. In Asmal_mescit, einer besonders hübschen Ecke, sind wir zum Essen verabredet. Früher lag hier das französische Pera, ein nobler Stadtteil, in dem Republikgründer Atatürk in den 30ern mondäne Feste feierte. Jahrzehntelang schlummerten die weinumrankten Gässchen, verträumten Plätze und verfallenen Jugendstilhäuser vor sich hin, bis sie vor etwa einem Jahr die Istanbuler Szene für sich entdeckte. Heute trifft man sich in den neuen Cafés und Kunstgalerien schon nachmittags zum Wasserpfeiferauchen oder Tavlaspielen – das orientalische Backgammon – und bleibt bis in die Nacht. Wir gönnen uns im Kult-Restaurant „Galatea“ frischen Salat, köstliche Vorspeisen und Rak_.

Die Straße vibriert, als einen Häuserblock weiter im „Babylon“ der Auftritt von Ark_n Allen alias Mercan Dede beginnt. Die eigenwillige Musik des türkischen Shooting-Stars mischt sakrale Sufi-Gesänge und coole Elektrobeats. Er ist wie die deutsch-türkische Rapperin Aziza A. und die New Yorker Hip-Hop-Queen Sultana ein Zögling des Istanbuler Erfolgs-Labels „Doublemoon“. Orien-tal Dub, Groove alla Turqua, Derwish Trance – die Musikszene gibt sich neuerdings innovativ und selbstbewusst. Im „Babylon“ stoßen junge Talente auf offene Ohren – wenn nicht gerade De-Phazz oder DJ Krust aus Bristol auftreten.

Auf der Istiklal Caddesi, der „Straße der Befreiung“, schieben wir uns durch gut gelaunte Menschenmassen und weichen der überfüllten Tram aus. Ein Schuhputzer will unbedingt Katis Stoff-Turnschuhe putzen, zwei Rosenverkäufer streiten um ihr Revier. Alp möchte Piraten-CDs kaufen, jemand hat ihm eine Adresse gegeben, ein renovierungsbedürftiges Gebäude, in dem ein einziger Raum erleuchtet ist mit CD-Türmen bis unter die Decke, das Stück keine zwei Euro. Die neue Moby ist auch dabei.

Nächtliches Shopping ist in Beyo_lu normal. Auch die Tänzerin Sibel Gökçe schließt ihren Designer-Laden spät, sind es doch vor allem Nachtschwärmer, die sich im „Sürreal“ einkleiden: Paillettenshorts, kurvige Korsagen, neonfarbene Clubwear, blonde Perücken – Sibel hat den Stoff, aus dem Istanbuls Nächte sind. Und nicht nur das. Die junge Türkin, die sich selbst als „crazy Anarchist“ bezeichnet, schreibt gerade ihr erstes Buch: eine Hommage an ihr geliebtes Istanbul. Mit Anekdoten, verrückt und durchgeknallt, eben surreal, wie die Autorin. Und die Nächte der Bosporus-Metropole. Man kann süchtig werden nach der Aufbruchstimmung. Ob hier 14 oder 16 Millionen Menschen leben, weiß keiner. Dass die meisten jung sind, fällt sofort auf: Schätzungsweise 80 Prozent sind unter 35. Ihre Zukunft: ungewiss. Wirtschaftskrisen, Islamisierung, Erdbeben-Angst. Man denkt ungern an morgen, man feiert lieber.

Die Avantgarde trifft sich in kleinen Underground-Clubs wie „Switch“, „Milk“ oder „Shaft“. Hier regieren Elektro, Glam und minimalistisches Design. Ufuk, Hasan und Co. stehen hinter den Turntables – eine junge türkische DJ-Elite, die mittlerweile auch im Ausland gefragt ist. Doch der Istanbuler Szene wird es nicht leicht gemacht. Hinter der Glitzerfassade steckt Knochenarbeit, davon kann Party-Veranstalter Murat ein Lied singen. Viele Clubs bleiben Eintagsfliegen im Dschungel der Nacht. „Wenn endlich alles läuft, wie es soll, kommt immer was dazwischen“, so Murat. Die Mafia verdoppelt Bestechungsgelder. Die Islamisten verbieten Alkoholausschank nach Mitternacht. Die Anlage wird geklaut. Oder sonst was.

Kein Wunder, dass sich gute Adressen oft verstecken. Wir tauchen ab in dunkle Seitenstraßen und überqueren eine Baustelle – bis ein Aufzug uns in den fünften Stock eines schmalen Altbaus hievt. Zu einem Garten Eden im Istanbuler Himmel: Das „Bilsak“, die Roof-Bar mit vielen Pflanzen, ist Lieblings-Hangout von Künstlern und schrägen Vögeln. Die Besitzerin, Schauspielerin und Szene-Girl Yasemin Alkaya, geht in einem elfenbeinfarbenen Brokatkleid lächelnd von Tisch zu Tisch, ganz Königin der Nacht. „Prinzessin“, korrigiert sie. Die Königin ist Mama Ayfer. Viele kommen nur ihrer Marmeladen und Börek-Snacks wegen. Die Stimmung ist ausgelassen, die Cocktails süß, und der Sichelmond glitzert silbern.
